Traveling Display – Honoring 100 Years of the US 36 Hwy Assoc.

009Learn about US 36 Highway and the history of the  US 36 Highway Association. The display is located in Seneca Free Library and will remain until Wednesday April 23rd. The display features memorabilia, books, pictures and news articles that reflect on the 100 years. Included are photographs of Governor Hodges and the delegation that mapped out the route across Kansas, from St. Joseph, MO to Denver, CO in September 1913. In its 100 years, the Association experienced the ‘pride of development’, a tragic plane crash in 1949, the Miss Perfect 36 contest (1951~1954); all while promoting commerce & tourism along the route. Come see and you too may say…..”remember when….!”

For more information about the Traveling Display and its future schedule contact the Association Field Representative; Christiane ‘Criquet’ Cole (785) 540-4248 or write her at  us36treasurehunt@gmail.com. Bob Strevey, US 36 Hwy Assoc. Board member is spearheading an initiative, along with the good citizens of Norcator, KS,  to open a US Highway 36 Association Museum. We Need Your Help Naming Our Robot

robot 002

HELP! The Library Ladies could not agree on a name for our Summer Reading Mascot! We did narrow it down to 3 great choices for the Robot. We’ve decided to ask our patrons to vote on a name. Miss Dee will be touring the schools the week of  May 12 to introduce our Robot to the children, tell them about Summer Reading and explain how they must come into the library to vote for a name.

Come into the library on or before May 22 {the last day of school, should be easy to remember!}  to write out your vote. We will announce the name with the most votes May 23.

Sign up for Summer Reading begins May 27.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program One Year Old

On a cold, dark night in January of 2013, Seneca Free Library kicked off the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The idea for this program came to us a year or so earlier. Staff member Dee Lizzol spent a lot of time working out the details and planning the kick off party. The weather did not cooperate and kept a lot of people from attending that night. Word got out and we soon had more children signed up than we had cars to put them in! By the end of the year we had 90 children signed up, their families committed to reading to their children regularly.

There is no closing date for this program at this time. The only “time limitation” for the program is before your child reaches kindergarten. You can still sign children up or continue reading and counting books for children already enrolled. What better time to resolve to “restart you engines” and make this a priority again than the new year. Cold winter evenings are a great time to snuggle together under a blanket for reading.

Any book your young child listens to counts. It can be 1,000 different books or one book 1,000 times. Siblings, care givers, teachers, grandparents and parents, it doesn’t matter who reads to them, if your child is listening, remember to mark the calendar. Our goal is to instill a love of reading and to prepare them for success in school and beyond.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Tasting Event Scheduled for Monday March 2

  WFD1

How many times have you heard this? How many times a week do you say it yourself? Who hasn’t stood in front of the refrigerator with the door open, letting cold air out, waiting for some inspiration or magic to happen?

Well, librarians have had the same experiences, so together maybe we can figure this out. We are holding a What’s for Dinner tasting event. Participants are asked to bring a casserole or crock pot dish that is delicious, easy, and can be made with ingredients purchased in our local grocery stores. No calamari or truffle oil required! You just bring your hot, ready to eat dish. The library will provide plates, forks/spoons, and beverages. We plan to provide everyone attending with the recipes.

Our tasting is rescheduled for Monday March 2 at 7:00 p.m. We ask that you call, email or reply on Facebook if you plan to attend. This way we are sure to have enough tableware, seating and copies of recipes for everyone. We’d  like to have your recipes ahead of time so we can all enjoy food and fellowship that evening. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.  Feel free to call the library with any questions you may have at 336-2377 or by email librarian@www.senecafreelibrary.org.

“He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore. “

003The puzzles pictured here are available for check out from the Library. These would be a great activity for house guests over the holidays. Set one up in a quiet corner or in the middle of all the commotion for everyone to work on a little each day. Most of these puzzles are recommended for ages 12+ and have 1,000 pieces, some have 500 pieces.  What have you got to lose? Give it a try!

New Sign Installed @ Library

new sign 004Several years ago we decided it would be nice for our patrons to have a sign listing the hours we are open closer to the street. We put this idea on our wish list and thought about it some more. Earlier this year the family of Leonard Wassenberg wanted to do something for the library in memory of him. We pulled out our wish list and they granted this wish.

We thank the family of Leonard Wassenberg for donating the sign, the city crew for erecting it and Rottinghaus Signs for designing it. We also have a new bike rack directly behind the sign. This will make parking bicycles very convenient.

WE NEED YOUR BOXES

DVD boxes 002

The library needs small boxes for shipping DVDs. We send a lot of our DVDs out to other libraries in northeast Kansas. There are 40 other libraries that we share our catalog/items with and we get requests from across the state as well. Bundling up our fragile DVD cases in cardboard boxes saves a lot of wear and tear. So, if you get a receive a box that would fit 2-5 DVDs don’t toss it away, toss it our way, please! Thank you!

This picture shows the stash we already have, as you can see, we will accept any cardboard box that is DVD sized.

New Childrens Learning Computer has Arrived

The Library has a new early literacy station in the children’s section. This new computer was made possible through a grant from the State Library of Kansas and memorial donations. It is designed for children ages 2~8 years old and is loaded with all kinds of learning games and activities. As you can see in the pictures the keyboard is brightly color coded and kid sized.  We encourage and welcome you to stop in and try out this new computer with your childrenNEW CHILDREN'S COMPUTER 9.5.13 001 NEW CHILDREN'S COMPUTER 9.5.13 002 NEW CHILDREN'S COMPUTER 9.5.13 001 NEW CHILDREN'S COMPUTER 9.5.13 002 photo
